IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two maps illustrates the changes made to the road access and parking facilities at a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the Hospital access system was considerably improved during this period. The main changes were the construction of two roundabouts, the relocation and separation of parking areas, and the individual bus stop is replaced by a bus station.

In 2007, the City Hospital was surrounded by a ring road, while the hospital road ran southwards from the hospital to City Road. There were three bus stops on each side of the Hospital Road. A single car park for both staff and public was located to the east of this road, between the hospital and City Road.

In 2010, the road system had been substantially redesigned. The two roundabouts were added: one at the southern entrance to the hospital and another at the junction with the City Road. Hospital road was connected to both roundabouts, providing easier access to the hospital. The former bus stops was removed and replaced by a bus station to the southwest of the hospital.

In addition, the original shared car park was divided into two separate facilities. A public car park was constructed to the east of the ring road, while staff car park was positioned southeast to the hospital, close to Hospital Road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student covers all key features of the two maps successfully, presenting a clear overview of the main developments between 2007 and 2010. Specific details such as the addition of roundabouts, the restructuring of the car parks, and the replacement of bus stops with a bus station are accurately reported and contrasted. The information is fully grounded in the visual data provided, with logical comparisons made throughout. The response satisfies all requirements of Task 1 for a high band score, demonstrating a well-developed and complete summary of the changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. The essay begins with an introductory paragraph that includes a solid overview, followed by well-sequenced body paragraphs dedicated to the 2007 map and the 2010 map respectively. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the spatial and temporal changes, as seen in phrases such as 'In 2007', 'In 2010', and 'In addition'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and referencing throughout the text remains clear and accurate, resulting in a cohesive and easily readable essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student employs a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic map description. Words and phrases such as 'substantially redesigned', 'relocation', and 'divided into two separate facilities' demonstrate good lexical control and an awareness of collocation. While there is a minor grammatical slip with vocabulary phrasing (e.g., 'staff car park was positioned southeast to the hospital' missing an article), the range is wide enough to convey precise meanings and spatial relationships effectively without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures with frequent error-free sentences. Examples such as 'While the hospital road ran southwards from the hospital to City Road' and 'A public car park was constructed to the east of the ring road' show good control over passive voice and subordinate clauses. There are minor lapses, such as 'The two maps illustrates' (subject-verb agreement) and 'The former bus stops was removed' (plural subject with singular verb), but these errors are infrequent and do not impede the overall flow or clarity of the writing.
