IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given two maps show road access to a city hospital in the difference of three years, i.e. 2007 and 2010.

Overall, in the year 2007, City Hosiptal had a limited access to road, only by a ring road. Similarly, the sorroundings of Hospital was not well managed. While, there has been made a rapid and well-organised transformation in overall area of the Hospital.

In detail, Ring Road was only the road that provided easy access to City hosiptal. The Ring Road was touched by a perpendicular Hospital Road formig a 'T' shape, which is further connecting to the City road making a juction. Similarly, On the eastern side of Hospital Road, hospital staffs as well as public vehicle shared the same parking area. Likewise, Bus stop was located at the far-eastern side of city hospital.

Significant changes has been made in overall area of the hospital area in 2010, where public car park was constructed by the east side of Hospital, keeping staff car park in the previous area. Hospital Road was renovated into two round about in its both end connecting to a City Road and Ring Road. Similarly, Bus Station has been replaced to the western side of the Hospital Road, which has access from both of the round-about.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the two maps of the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the general transformation from limited road access to a more well-organised layout. Key features are reported, such as the introduction of roundabouts, the relocation and expansion of car parks, and the changes to bus services. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reporting details; for example, the student states that the bus stop was located at the far-eastern side in 2007, whereas the map shows multiple bus stops along Hospital Road, and the 2010 map shows a bus station on the western side. Nevertheless, the main trends and changes are adequately covered, resulting in a solid performance for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is logically organised into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the features of each map. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overall trends from specific details. Cohesive devices are generally used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'In detail', and 'Similarly'. However, some cohesive links and referencing are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'While, there has been made a rapid and well-organised transformation' and 'Bus Station has been replaced to the western side'. Progression is clear overall, but paragraph transitions and sentence linking could be smoother to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student attempts a range of vocabulary relevant to map interpretation, including terms like 'transformation', 'perpendicular', 'junction', and 'renovated'. However, there are several noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'Hosiptal' (misspelled), 'sorroundings', 'formig', 'juction', and 'replaced to the western side' instead of relocated. Some phrases are repetitive, like 'overall area of the hospital'. While the vocabulary is adequate to communicate the main features of the maps, these persistent inaccuracies in spelling and word collocation prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The Ring Road was touched by a perpendicular Hospital Road formig a 'T' shape, which is further connecting to the City road making a juction.' Grammatical errors occur with some frequency, particularly regarding passive voice and prepositions, such as 'there has been made a rapid... transformation', 'Significant changes has been made' (agreement error), and 'Bus Station has been replaced'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but tense consistency fluctuates slightly between past and present descriptions. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the score to a Band 6.
