IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps illustrates route to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, it is evident that infrastructure moderanised a bit with introduction of a bus station, a separate public car park and two roundabouts. Ring road is common in both maps at the backside of hospital.
In 2007, the structure was simple and had linear roads with a city road heading towards the City hospital from both southeastern and western sides. Six bus stops can be seen adjacent to the hospital road in the center which leads directly to the City hospital. There was only one parking area for both staff and public that can be assessed from the hospital road in the southeastern area.
In 2010, there are some changes such as availability of a bus station that can be reached through two rounabouts at both ends of the hospital road. A separate car park has established as well just beside hospital in the east.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the two maps comparing road access to the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. An overview is provided in the second sentence, highlighting the general modernization, the introduction of a bus station, a separate public car park, and roundabouts. Key details such as the change in car park designations, the removal of individual bus stops in favor of a central bus station, and the addition of roundabouts are accurately captured and compared. The response meets all the core requirements for Task Achievement, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression from an introduction to an overview, followed by distinct body paragraphs for 2007 and 2010. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as transitional phrases like 'In 2007' and 'In 2010'. However, paragraphing is somewhat rudimentary, and referencing is occasionally slightly loose (for instance, 'that can be assessed' instead of accessed). Despite these minor cohesion and referencing flaws, the logical flow is clear throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'infrastructure', 'modernised', 'linear roads', and 'designations'. There are, however, some vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'moderated' instead of modernized, 'assessed' instead of accessed, and 'rounabouts' instead of roundabouts. While these errors occur, they do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is attempted, such as relative clauses ('that can be reached through two rounabouts'). Control over grammar and punctuation is generally decent, but there are noticeable errors including missing articles ('Ring road is common', 'just beside hospital') and word-form errors. The majority of simple sentences are clear and correct, but complex structures occasionally contain minor slips. Communication is never impeded.
