IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The illustration gives information about the road access to a hospital located in the city. Overall, in 2010, the location of bus stand were changed, and car park were divided into two parts.
It is quite evident from the diagram that in 2007, there was a ring road around the hospital. There was a bus stand is the east side of the hospital and a car park in the south-east corner of the hospital in 2007. City hospital also had a hospital road connected with that city road.
Meanwhile, in 2010, there were some changes in the hospital.
The location of bus station had cahnged from east to south side. The car park were divided into two parts, one is the public car park and the other is staff car park. In 2010, a roundabout had been added on the road to avoid accidents, but the ring road had not been changed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The candidate attempts to cover the main features of the two maps, noting the changes to the bus station/stops and the division of the car park. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reporting the spatial details. For example, the student states that there was a 'bus stand is the east side' in 2007, whereas the map shows individual bus stops along Hospital Road. Furthermore, the claim that the bus station changed from the 'east to south side' in 2010 misrepresents the visual data, as the new bus station is located on the west side of Hospital Road. The overview is also very brief and lacks comprehensive synthesis of the overall spatial transformation. This performance corresponds to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into four short paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs comparing the two years. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive phrasing and weak cohesive devices. The transition between paragraphs is somewhat mechanical, relying on phrases like 'It is quite evident' and 'Meanwhile, in 2010'. Reference pronouns and cohesive links are occasionally vague or faulty (e.g., 'connected with that city road'). Paragraphing is present, but overall structural control remains basic, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic vocabulary such as 'road', 'hospital', 'car park', and 'changes'. There are several word choice and spelling errors, such as 'bus stand' instead of bus stops/station, and 'cahnged' for changed. Less common lexical items are attempted but used inaccurately or inappropriately in context. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic, errors in spelling and collocation occasionally cause strain, placing this writing at a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as introductory clauses and past/present tense structures. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'location of bus stand were changed', 'car park were divided'), missing articles, and preposition errors (e.g., 'is the east side'). Although these errors do not completely obscure the message, they occur frequently and hinder fluency, justifying a Band 5.0.
