IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given maps provide the architectural layout of a road leading to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, it is clear that a bus station has been built near the hospital removing the several bus stops. Moreover, the car parks for the staff and public have been allocated
separately.
In detail, the city hospital in 2007 had a joint car park for both the public and the hospital staff. Whereas the car park for the citizens was moved to the east side of the hospital linked to ring road in 2010.
In 2007, there were six bus stop points along the hospital road which were later replaced with a bus station in the south-west direction of the hospital which was connected to two roundabouts, one leading to the ring road and other to the city road. In 2007, hospital had only one entrance point in contrast to 2010 when it had two entrances from staff as well as public car parks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully identifies the main features and makes relevant comparisons between the two maps of the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. The overview effectively captures the key transformations, such as the construction of a new bus station replacing individual stops and the segregation of staff and public car parks. Key details are reported accurately, including the new roundabouts and the repositioning of the public car park. While some minor details could be extended further, the response fully addresses all requirements of Task 1 with a clear and well-developed selection of features.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The report demonstrates a clear logical organization with an effective overall progression. The essay is divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In detail', 'Whereas', and 'which were later replaced' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the comparisons. Paragraphing is handled well, separating the macro-level overview from the micro-level spatial changes. However, referencing and transitions between sentences could occasionally be smoother to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing functional terms related to maps and urban planning such as 'architectural layout', 'segregated', 'repositioned', and 'roundabouts'. There are some less common lexical items used with a good awareness of style, though minor awkwardness occurs, such as 'bus stop points' instead of 'bus stops'. Spelling and word choice errors are minimal and do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 7 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses (e.g., 'which were later replaced with a bus station in the south-west direction...') and prepositional phrases. There are several error-free sentences, and the control over past tenses required for describing maps of past years is generally good. A few minor awkward phrasings appear, such as 'road leading to a city hospital' rather than 'road access', but these do not impede overall comprehension.
