IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the changes in the road layout leading to the City Hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Multiple changes have been made since 2007. The carparking is now located in separate areas for the staff and the visitors. A bus station has been introduced in place of multiple smaller bus stops. In addition two roundabouts have been constucted to guide the traffic in front of the hospital.

The city road leading to the hospital converges at the first roundabout, which is locted before the bus station. Travelling down this road, towards the hospital then leads to the second roundabout. This roundabout provides access to the staff parking area which was formerly a common parking area for everyone, as well as the newly constructed public parking lot adjacent to the hospital.

A common bus station has been constructed, replacing the six older bus stops that were located on either side of the hospital road. Furthermore, the bus station has two direct roads connecting it to each of the roundabouts, facilitating traffic travelling both towards and away from the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the maps, successfully highlighting the major transformations that took place between 2007 and 2010. You noted the restructuring of the car parks into separate staff and public zones, the replacement of individual bus stops with a centralised bus station, and the introduction of two roundabouts. An overview is present within the introduction and body paragraphs, capturing the main trends well. However, the response lacks a distinct concluding or summary paragraph that pulls together the overarching changes, which prevents it from reaching the highest band. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are adequately addressed with relevant comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response exhibits a clear overall progression, moving logically from an introduction to general changes, and then detailing specific features such as the road layout and the bus station. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thematic areas. Cohesive devices are generally managed well, with phrases like 'In addition', 'Travelling down this road', and 'Furthermore' helping to guide the reader through the spatial descriptions. However, referencing is occasionally slightly imprecise, such as 'The city road leading to the hospital', which could be tied more explicitly to the map labels. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, incorporating functional terms such as 'restructured', 'newly constructed', 'adjacent', and 'facilitating'. There are some successful attempts at less common phrasing, such as 'centralised bus station' and 'public parking lot'. However, a few spelling and typographical errors detract from the lexical score, notably 'carparking' (written as one word), 'constucted' instead of 'constructed', and 'locted' instead of 'located'. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary used is precise enough to convey the spatial changes clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating control over relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'which was formerly a common parking area for everyone' and 'facilitating traffic travelling both towards and away from the hospital'. Grammatical control is generally good, with the majority of sentences being grammatically sound. There are, however, a few minor mechanical errors, such as missing commas (e.g., 'In addition two roundabouts') and the aforementioned spelling mistakes that occasionally disrupt the flow. Overall, grammatical accuracy is solid for this level.
