Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student makes an attempt to describe the changes shown in the two maps between 2007 and 2010, noting key alterations such as the separation of staff and public parking, the relocation of the bus station, and the addition of roundabouts. However, the response lacks a clear overall summary or overview, which is a vital requirement for Academic Task 1. Furthermore, there are some misinterpretations of the spatial data, such as claiming the public parking moved to the east side of the hospital when it is actually placed across Ring Road, and incorrectly describing the location of a roundabout. Due to the lack of an overarching summary and inaccurate feature reporting, the score reflects a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into two main paragraphs corresponding to the two years, which provides a basic structural framework. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of sophisticated cohesive devices. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'for suppose' and 'the city road led to the junction which leads to the hospital road'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is mechanical and basic. Overall, the organizational structure is minimally adequate, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with noticeable spelling and word choice errors such as 'staf', 'seperated', 'busstation', and 'round about'. There are very few attempts at less common lexical items, and those that are attempted often lack precision or are misused (e.g., 'for suppose'). While the meaning is generally decipherable, the restricted vocabulary range and frequent lexical inaccuracies limit the score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many complex attempts are flawed in grammar, punctuation, or capitalization (e.g., lowercase 'in' at the start of paragraphs, missing commas, and run-on sentences like 'The city road led to the junction which leads to the hospital road by taking a right...'). Verb tense control is inconsistent, mixing past and present tenses inappropriately ('is present', 'led'). Frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning the response with Band 5.0.
