IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two maps illustrates the modifications made to transportation infrastructure and road access surrounding a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall the area underwent significant redevelopment at improving traffic flow and seperating public and private transport. The major changes include the addition of two roundabouts, the construction of dedicated bus station and segregation of public and staff car park.
In 2007 the road access from city road in south to city hospital was via hospital road which lead straight to ringroad encircling the city hospital. Six bus stops were situated along the both sides of hospital road. By 2010 the bus stops were entirely replaced by a bus station located south west of city hospital and 2 roundabouts were added on the hospital road which were accessed by bus station and city road.
Parking facilites were also reconsidered, in 2007 there was only one car park for everyone located in south of the hospital but in 2010 another car park was built in the east of city hospital exclusively for public accessed via ring road which seperated staff and public parking spaces.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making clear comparisons between the two maps of the city hospital from 2007 and 2010. An effective overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the key modifications such as the addition of roundabouts, a dedicated bus station, and the segregation of parking. Details are accurately reported, noting the replacement of individual bus stops with a bus station, the construction of two roundabouts on Hospital Road, and the creation of a new public car park accessed via Ring Road. The response is well-supported by specific spatial references from the maps, meeting all requirements for Task Achievement at a high standard.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The report exhibits a clear logical progression from an introductory statement and general overview into detailed body paragraphs discussing transport infrastructure and parking facilities respectively. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to link ideas, such as "Overall", "In 2007", and "By 2010". Paragraphing is managed sufficiently, dividing the overview and distinct feature categories into readable sections. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional minor slip-ups in punctuation or slightly condensed transitions prevent it from reaching the highest band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suited to academic descriptions of maps and changes over time. Phrases like "transportation infrastructure", "signficant redevelopment", "traffic flow", and "segregation of public and staff car park" show good control of less common lexical items. There are minor spelling and word-form errors, such as "seperating" (instead of separating) and "facilites" (instead of facilities), but these do not impede communication and the range remains adequate for a solid score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively to compare the two years, employing relative clauses and prepositional phrases (e.g., "the road access from city road in south to city hospital was via hospital road which lead straight to ringroad"). There are some minor grammatical and punctuation inaccuracies, such as missing articles ("from city road in south to city hospital") and minor capitalization oversights, but the majority of sentences are clear and error-free, maintaining good overall control of grammar.
