Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 142 words, which impacts Task Achievement. However, the student successfully identifies the main features of the maps, such as the addition of roundabouts, changes to the car parks (splitting staff and public), and the introduction of a new bus station in 2010. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, capturing the primary developments. While some details are slightly imprecise, such as the description of the roads and bus stops, the key spatial changes between 2007 and 2010 are generally covered. To improve further, the writer should ensure the word count exceeds the 150-word threshold and provide a more fully developed, cohesive overview without relying on fragmented sentences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response attempts a paragraph structure with an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for 2007 and 2010. However, the paragraphing is underdeveloped, and some paragraphs consist of very short, disjointed sentences. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or repetitive, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In 2007/2010'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'east side of it'. While there is a basic logical arrangement moving from 2007 to 2010, the overall progression lacks smooth transitions and sophistication. Better control of cohesive ties and more developed paragraph structures are needed to reach higher bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, relying on terms directly from the prompt such as 'ring road', 'hospital road', 'city road', and 'car park'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'roads are developed massively', 'bus stop was distance away', and 'bend wih hospital road'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are very limited, and spelling or punctuation slips occur (e.g., '2007nand', 'rounabout'). The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, but errors in word formation and collocation occasionally cause minor strain for the reader. A wider variety of precise geographical and descriptive terminology is required for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are rare and often contain noticeable errors, such as 'ring road were surrounded' (passive voice error) and 'bus station is close to hospital road on the west. Two roundabout is added' (subject-verb agreement errors). Punctuation and capitalization are frequently inaccurate, particularly with missing spaces after commas and periods. Frequent grammatical errors occur throughout the text, which can cause some difficulty for the reader, though the core meaning usually remains discernible.
