IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate changes to different road routes to reach the City hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, it is clear that the map changed significantly by the addition of a bus station and two car parks for public and for staff in different locations over three years. Bus stops, that were near Hospital Road had changed into two roundabouts.

In detail, in 2007, firstly, the City hospital was surrounded by the Ring Road, and subsequently, from the center of the City hospital from the south side, it was a Hospital Road. On both sides of this road, bus stops were located, and on the east, there was a parking area for both staff and public cars. Moreover, on the south-east, there was a City Road.

However, the blueprint of the City hospital had been transformed completely by making a space on the east for public vehicle parking. Furthermore, the Ring Road changed from a straight path into two roundabouts that connected to the Hospital Road in between. Lastly, a bus station was constructed on the west in place of bus stops, and on the east there was a separate parking space for staff.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses the prompt by outlining the main changes to the City Hospital road access between 2007 and 2010. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the key developments such as the introduction of roundabouts, a bus station, and separate car parks. The student reports relevant features from both maps, noting that individual bus stops were replaced by roundabouts and that the staff and public car parking arrangements were modified. However, some descriptions are slightly imprecise or awkward, such as stating that the Ring Road changed from a straight path into roundabouts, whereas the original Ring Road enclosed the hospital. Despite minor descriptive inaccuracies, all key spatial changes are covered well, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is organized into four paragraphs, following a logical structure with an introduction, an overview, a description of the 2007 map, and a description of the 2010 map. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the comparison, using transition phrases such as "Overall," "In detail," and "However." However, some cohesive links feel slightly mechanical or awkward, such as "and subsequently, from the center of the City hospital from the south side, it was a Hospital Road." Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods, maintaining a coherent overall arrangement even though internal sentence-level cohesion occasionally falters due to convoluted phrasing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a task 1 map description, incorporating terms such as "illustrate," "transformed completely," "constructed," and "parking area." There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but some word choices and collocations are unnatural, such as "making a space on the east for public vehicle parking" instead of establishing or designating a public car park. Spelling is generally accurate, but lexical control is inconsistent, leading to occasional awkward expressions that do not severely impede communication but prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses ("Bus stops, that were near Hospital Road") and participial phrases. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several awkward constructions, punctuation errors (unnecessary commas, such as separating the subject and verb in "Bus stops, that were near Hospital Road"), and prepositional errors (e.g., "on the east there was a separate parking space"). While these errors do not impede overall communication, the frequency of grammatical slips and lack of consistent error-free complex sentences place this performance firmly in the band 6 category.
