IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps display the contrasting information regarding the road access of a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

At a cursory glance of the maps it is evident that the most significant change has been the eradication of 6 bus stops and inclusion of two roundabouts right by the entrance of the hospital. Addtionally, the car parking space remains in the same place across the years.

In 2007, the map clearly visualizes only one entrance, along with the faciliation of 6 bus stops right by the both sides of hospital road, that is ulitmately adjoined with the ring road extednded along the premises of the hospital building.

On the other hand, the 2010 layout illustrates development of a publi car park on the east side of the hospital, faciliated by the formation of another entrance of the hospital. Another most drastic aleration have been the construction of two roundabouts on the both ends of hospital road, which is adjoined on two ends by a newly developed bus station on the west side and previously maintained staff car park on the east side. These substaintial recontruction changes enable seamless transport and reduced traffic congestions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features of the city hospital road access in 2007 and 2010. You provide a clear overview mentioning the addition of roundabouts and the removal of bus stops. Comparisons and specific changes are highlighted, such as the new public car park, the designated staff car park, the new bus station, and the two roundabouts. The selection of data is accurate according to the maps provided. However, the final sentence strays slightly into speculation ('These substantial reconstruction changes enable seamless transport and reduced traffic congestions'), which is not directly present on the map data, though minor. Overall, all key spatial changes are reported well, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The report demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression from the introduction and overview to the specific details of 2007 and then 2010. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'At a cursory glance', 'Additionally', 'In 2007', and 'On the other hand'. However, paragraphing is slightly underdeveloped, as the response is condensed into an introduction/overview block followed by two body blocks without clear separation of the overview into its own distinct paragraph, and there are mechanical linking issues. Referencing and progression are generally clear, positioning this response firmly at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'eradication', 'cursory glance', 'alteration', and 'seamless transport'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'Addtionally' instead of 'Additionally', 'faciliation' instead of 'facilitation', 'extednded' instead of 'extended', 'publi' instead of 'public', 'aleration' instead of 'alteration', and 'recontruction' instead of 'reconstruction'. These lexical errors and typos detract from precision and prevent the score from reaching a higher band, placing it at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('road that is ultimately adjoined...'). There are frequent grammatical and mechanical errors, particularly typos and slight structural awkwardness, such as 'visualizes only one entrance, along with the faciliation of 6 bus stops right by the both sides of hospital road, that is ulitmately adjoined'. Preposition usage also falters occasionally ('by the both sides'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur too frequently for a higher band, justifying a score of 6.0.
