IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The two maps illustrate the road access to a city hospital from the year 2007 both of its ends.

Overall, the map of 2010 shows in detail the reconstruction and redesign of the previous city hospital. These have been some extensive changes made which comprises of a public car park, separated from the staff as in 2007 located at the eastern side of the hospital wall. Other modifications include two roundabouts, just at the middle of the southern side, joining the hospital road. An adaptation to bus station at the south-wear corner is also noted, typically connecting the station from the two roundabouts.

Firstly, there is a map of a city hospital in 2007, highlighting the infrastruction of a combined car parking used by both the staff and public. Public car park is constructed at the north-eastern sided wall of the hospital, whereas the staff car parking still owned the old place.

Secondly, Two roundabouts were also substantially seen at each corner of the road. Additionally, a bus station also joined both the roundabouts available on the road straight to the city hospital, whereas, the old map describes that the bus stops were at the opposite sides of the road, facing the city road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by comparing the two maps of the city hospital from 2007 and 2010. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, mentioning reconstruction and changes such as roundabouts and parking. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and confused details when reporting specific features. For instance, the text mentions a bus station at the 'south-wear corner' and states that roundabouts joined the hospital road 'at the middle of the southern side', which misinterprets the map data where roundabouts are located at intersections. Furthermore, the overall selection of features lacks clear cohesion in presenting a structured comparison between the two time periods, leading to a somewhat disjointed account of the modifications. Consequently, this performance aligns with Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs introduced by sequencing words like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly'. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing sentences and unclear referencing. For instance, 'Firstly, there is a map of a city hospital in 2007' does not accurately guide the reader through the comparison, and the relationship between ideas is often mechanical or muddled. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs suffers from abrupt shifts in focus between the two years, resulting in a somewhat disorganized structure that fits Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic description, incorporating terms such as 'reconstruction', 'infrastruction' (an error for infrastructure), 'modifications', and 'roundabouts'. However, there are notable word-choice errors, incorrect collocations, and spelling slips (e.g., 'south-wear' instead of south-west, 'infrastruction', 'car parking still owned the old place'). While the student attempts some less common lexical items, the frequent inaccuracies in formation and precision restrict the score to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses and participial phrases ('comprises of a public car park, separated from the staff'). However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in prepositions, verb forms, and active/passive voice ('Public car park is constructed...', 'staff car parking still owned the old place', 'joins both the roundabouts available on the road'). These errors occasionally impede clear communication and cause difficulty for the reader, placing this criterion at Band 5.
