IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The two maps illustrate the road access to a city hospital from the year 2007 both of its ends.
Overall, the map of 2010 shows the reconstruction and redesign of the previous city hospital. These have been some extensive changes made which comprises of a public car park, separated from the staff as in 2007, located at the eastern side of the hospital wall. Other modifications include two roundabouts, just at the middle of the southern side, joining the hospital road. An adaptation to bus station at the south-wear corner is also noted, typically connecting the station from the two roundabouts.
Firstly, there is a map of a city hospital in 2007, highlighting the infrastructure of a combined car parking used by both the staff and public. Public car park is constructed at the north-eastern side of the wall, whereas the staff car parking still owned the old place.
Secondly, Two roundabouts were also substantially seen at each corner of the road. Additionally, a bus station also joined both the roundabouts available on the road straight to the city hospital, whereas, the old map describes that the bus stops were at the opposite sides of the road, facing the city road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to address the task by comparing the two maps of the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, mentioning reconstruction and changes such as a public car park and roundabouts. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and confusions regarding the spatial layout and features. For instance, the student states that the public car park is located at the eastern side of the hospital wall, whereas the 2010 map shows it on the east side of Ring Road, separate from the staff car park. Furthermore, the description of the bus station and roundabouts is muddled and contradicts the visual data. Overall, while the main features are touched upon, the lack of clarity and factual errors in reporting restrict the task achievement to a band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is divided into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing statements and poor referencing. For example, transition markers like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' are used, but they introduce muddled descriptions rather than clearly ordered points. Sentences within paragraphs often lack smooth connections, such as the sudden shift from discussing the 2010 map in paragraph two back to the 2007 map in paragraph three. Paragraphing structure is attempted, but cohesion is often faulty or mechanical, leading to an overall score of 5.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'reconstruction', 'redesign', and 'infrastructure', but these are often used inaccurately or inappropriately in context (e.g., 'staff car parking still owned the old place' and 'south-wear corner'). Word choice and collocation errors are noticeable, such as 'an adaptation to bus station'. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey a basic topic, frequent lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing prevent the response from achieving a higher band, placing it at a solid 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, such as 'from the year 2007 both of its ends', 'These have been some extensive changes made which comprises of', and 'Two roundabouts were also substantially seen'. Punctuation and preposition use are also occasionally faulty. While some sentences are clear, frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to a 5.0.
