IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps illustrate the road access to a city hospital from the year 2007 to 2010.

Overall, the map of 2010 shows the reconstruction and redesign of the previous city hospital. There have been some extensive changes made which comprise of a public car park, separated from the staff as in 2007, located at the eastern side of the hospital wall. Other modifications include two roundabouts, at the middle of the southern side, joining the hospital road. An adaptation to bus station at the south-wear corner is also noted, typically connecting the station from the two roundabouts.

Firstly, there is a map of a city hospital in 2007, highlighting the infrastructure of a combined car parking used by both the staff and public. Public car park is constructed at the north-eastern side of the wall, whereas the staff car parking still occupied by the old place.

Secondly, Two roundabouts were also clearly shown at each corner of the road. Additionally, a bus station also joined both the roundabouts available on the road straight to the city hospital, whereas, the old map describes that the bus stops were on the opposite sides of the road, facing the city road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student attempts to describe the main features of the maps comparing road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010. While an overview is provided in the second sentence, some of the specific descriptions contain inaccuracies and contradictions regarding the visual data. For example, the writer states that the public car park is located on the eastern side of the hospital wall and that the staff car parking is 'still occupied by the old place,' but the 2010 map shows the staff car park in the east and a new public car park across Ring Road to the northeast. Furthermore, the description of the bus station and roundabouts becomes slightly confused in the body paragraphs. Overall, the response addresses the prompt and covers key changes, but the misinterpretation of several spatial details limits task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is organized into paragraphs with an introduction, an overview, and subsequent detail paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally disjointed and repetitive, moving back and forth between the two maps in a confusing manner (e.g., introducing the 2007 map after discussing 2010 modifications). Cohesive devices are used, but some transitions like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' are awkwardly applied to describe entire features rather than a chronological or logical sequence. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion of the body paragraphs lacks clarity, making it sometimes difficult to follow which features belong to which year.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'reconstruction', 'modification', and 'infrastructure'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'comprise of', 'south-wear corner' (south-west), and 'car parking still occupied by the old place'. Word choices are sometimes imprecise, which occasionally impedes smooth communication. Spelling is generally acceptable, but collocation errors prevent the response from achieving a higher band in this category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and prepositional phrases. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several errors in preposition usage and sentence structure, such as 'comprise of' (active/passive confusion), 'a bus station also joined both the roundabouts available on the road straight to the city hospital, whereas, the old map describes that...' which results in a run-on and grammatically awkward structure. Punctuation errors, such as unnecessary commas splitting clauses, are also present. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.
