Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student successfully highlights the main features of the two maps comparing road access to the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. An overview is provided, noting the significant redevelopment including changes to car parking, the addition of roundabouts, and the new bus station. Key comparisons are made between the single combined car park in 2007 and the separated staff and public car parks in 2010. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in detail interpretation, such as describing the parking area as having 'expanded majorly' when the public car park was simply relocated and reconfigured. Despite minor shortcomings in data precision, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into four paragraphs, following a logical structure with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs detailing the specific changes. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'In addition', although some transitions are awkward or mechanically deployed (e.g., 'Since then in 2010, the facility has witnessed extensive revolution'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overall trends from the detailed comparisons. While the progression is generally clear, occasional awkward phrasing and referencing slightly disrupt the flow, placing this text firmly in the Band 6.0 range.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for a map description, including terms like 'redevelopment', 'constructed', 'relocated', and 'facility'. However, there are frequent word choice and collocation issues, such as 'majorly' instead of 'significantly', 'car parking' instead of 'car park', and 'cross road' instead of 'intersection'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical control lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. The vocabulary used is adequate to convey the intended meaning, matching the descriptors for Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. However, there are persistent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as comma splices and incorrect article usage (e.g., 'The given two plans illustrates', 'The car parking for staff and public have been, divided', and 'Two number roundabout constructed'). These errors do not completely impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band score. The control of grammar aligns with Band 5.5.
