IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given two plans illustrate, how people can access the city hospital by road in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the city hospital has undergone significant redevelopment. The car parks for staff and public have been divided in two individuals locations, which was combined in 2007. However, new construction of the roundabout observed in the year 2010, which was directly connected to the newly developed bus station.

Most of the hospital area was devoted to the combined car parking for staff as well as people in the year 2007. There was a cross road on the southern side, while the city hospital located on the northern side.

By 2010, the facility has witnessed extensive redevelopment. The former car parking for staff and public was replaced with the staff parking only. However, the public car parking has shifted on the north-east side.

A two number roundabout was constructed between the city hospital and the city road. In addition, the previous car park on the west side has been turned into a bus station. Notably, the parking area has been expanded significantly in the year 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the city hospital road access in 2007 and 2010. An overview is presented, noting the significant redevelopment including the separation of car parks and the addition of roundabouts and a bus station. Key comparisons are made, such as the shift of the public car park to the north-east and the transformation of the western car park into a bus station. However, there are a few minor inaccuracies in describing the map layout, such as stating that the previous car park on the west side was turned into a bus station (whereas the 2007 map shows the bus stops along Hospital Road and the car park on the east, with the new bus station located to the west of Hospital Road in 2010). Nevertheless, the response covers all key changes well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, a description of the 2007 layout, and finally the 2010 changes. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'By 2010', 'In addition', and 'Notably'. However, some referencing is slightly awkward or mechanical, such as 'which was combined in 2007' referring back to separate car parks, and the transition between paragraphs can feel a bit disjointed. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overall trends from the detailed temporal descriptions, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5/7 coherence profile.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms like 'redevelopment', 'constructed', 'shifted', and 'significantly'. There are some unnatural collocations and word choices, such as 'divided in two individuals locations' instead of 'divided into two individual locations', 'new construction of the roundabout observed' (awkward passive voice), and 'A two number roundabout was constructed' instead of 'Two roundabouts were constructed'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical control slips occasionally when attempting less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('which was directly connected') and prepositional phrases. However, grammatical errors occur with some frequency, such as comma splices or unnecessary commas ('illustrate, how people'), incorrect prepositions ('divided in two', 'shifted on the north-east'), and awkward passive constructions ('new construction of the roundabout observed'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the grammar score from reaching the higher bands where error-free sentences predominate.
