IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given two plans illustrate how people can access the city hospital by road in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the city hospital has undergone significant redevelopment. The car parks for staff and public have been divided in two individuals locations, which was combined in 2007. However, new construction of the roundabout observed in the year 2010, which was directly connected to the newly developed bus station.

Most of the hospital area was devoted to the combined car parking for staff as well as people in the year 2007. There was a cross road on the southern side, while the city hospital located on the northern side.

By 2010, the facility has witnessed extensive redevelopment. The former car parking for staff and public was replaced with the staff parking only. However, the public car parking has shifted on the north-east side.

A two number roundabout was constructed between the city hospital and the city road. In addition, the previous car park on the west side has been turned into a bus station. Notably, the parking area has been expanded significantly in the year 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the two maps of the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. A clear overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the main developments such as the separation of car parks, the addition of roundabouts, and the new bus station. Key features are selected and reported appropriately, including the shift of the public car park and the replacement of individual bus stops with a bus station. However, there are minor inaccuracies in spatial details, such as stating that 'the previous car park on the west side has been turned into a bus station' when the bus station is actually situated to the west of Hospital Road where bus stops previously stood, while the car park is on the east side. Overall, the task is well covered with relevant comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped reasonably into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific changes. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts, such as 'Overall', 'By 2010', and 'In addition'. However, paragraphing could be structured more effectively, as some paragraphs are quite short and disjointed (e.g., the third paragraph is only two sentences long). Referencing is occasionally slightly unclear or clumsy, such as 'which was combined in 2007' referring back to separate locations. Nonetheless, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms like 'redevelopment', 'constructed', 'shifted', and 'expanded significantly'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices and collocations are awkward or inaccurate, such as 'two individuals locations', 'new construction of the roundabout observed', and 'A two number roundabout was constructed'. Spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control is sometimes imprecise or strained when attempting more complex lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating passive voice structures ('has been turned into', 'was replaced') and temporal clauses ('By 2010'). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings that detract from accuracy, such as 'car parks... which was combined' (subject-verb agreement), 'the roundabout observed in the year 2010' (missing auxiliary/passive verb), and 'The former car parking' (unnecessary gerund use). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the score from reaching Band 7.
