IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The two plans present the information about road entry to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the city hospital has undergone significant redevelopment. The first most prominent change is that the car parks. One key difference is the construction of new bus station as well as development of roundabout.

By 2007, the city hospital located on the northern side. However, car parking for staff and public, and bus station was found on the both side of hospital road. The city road was directly connected to the hospital road on the southern side.

Since then, facility has witnessed extensive redevelopment. Former combined car parks were divided in two locations after that, the public car parking shifted on the north-east side and staff car parking remained on the same location. In addition, two roundabouts has been constructed on ending point of the hospital road. Notably, bus stop has been expanded to a bus station. However, it was straightly connected towards the roundabout.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to cover the main features of the maps, noting the changes to the car parks, the addition of roundabouts, and the new bus station. However, the overview sentence is incomplete ('The first most prominent change is that the car parks.'), and several details are inaccurate or confused, such as the statement that 'the city hospital located on the northern side' in 2007, whereas the maps show Ring Road surrounding the hospital on three sides. Furthermore, the progression of changes lacks clarity in places. While it addresses the general topic, the under-development of ideas and descriptive inaccuracies limit the score to Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, though the body paragraphs are quite short and fragmented. Cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'Overall', 'By 2007', 'However', 'Since then'), but referencing and logical flow are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward transitions like 'after that, the public car parking shifted'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the overall progression of information is disjointed in places, preventing a higher band score. Coherence suffers from abrupt shifts between sentences, such as 'In addition, two roundabouts has been constructed on ending point of the hospital road.'

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic summary, featuring terms like 'redevelopment', 'construction', and 'facility'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'road entry' instead of 'road access', 'former combined car parks were divided in two locations', and 'it was straightly connected towards the roundabout'. The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with frequent reliance on basic phrasing, which fits the Band 5 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('two roundabouts has been constructed'), missing articles ('the car parks', 'new bus station'), and awkward phrasing ('bus stop has been expanded to a bus station'). These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar performance firmly at Band 5.0.
