IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The maps diagram below illustrate the layout of a road reach to a hospital within three years.
Overall, road to the hospital has undergone a significant change throughout the period. It is clear that the car park area for the public and staff individuals has been distinguished properly. The roundabout has been introduced in place of bus stop.
To be specific, in the year 2007 there was not specifically a seperate region for the public car park which has been added right infront of the exit doorway.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 87 words. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, as key features of the two maps are omitted or underdeveloped. While the student identifies some major changes, such as the introduction of roundabouts and the separation of staff and public car parks, important spatial details and comprehensive comparisons are missing. To achieve a higher band, the student must develop a full overview, report a wider range of key data points from the maps, and ensure the word count requirement is met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The writing attempts a logical structure by starting with an introduction and an overall trend statement, followed by specific details. However, the text is extremely brief, resulting in poor overall progression and inadequate paragraphing. Cohesive devices are minimal, and phrases like 'To be specific' introduce abrupt and incomplete details. To improve, the student needs to expand the response into fully developed paragraphs, use a wider range of cohesive devices to link ideas, and ensure a clear, logical flow throughout the description.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and basic. The student uses some relevant vocabulary related to maps, such as 'layout', 'car park', and 'roundabout', but also makes noticeable collocation and word choice errors, such as 'road reach' instead of 'road access' and 'distinguished properly' instead of 'separated' or 'designated'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but vocabulary limitations and awkward phrasing prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Expanding the range of descriptive vocabulary and learning correct collocations will help improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional, faulty attempts at complex forms. There are several grammatical errors that impede clarity, such as 'The maps diagram below illustrate' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'there was not specifically a seperate region' (awkward phrasing and spelling error of 'separate'). Punctuation is basic. To improve, the student needs to work on grammatical accuracy, master subject-verb agreement, and incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures.
