IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pictorial representations illustrate the layout of the accessibility of the road to a city hospital in two different years 2007 and 2010. The former map depicts the sketch of accessed road to a city hospital in 2007. Whereas the latter reveals the modifications done in 2010 to the road.

At the first glance, it can be clearly seen that a city hospital is located in the middle of the road named as ring road. The hospital road was connected to the city road on the southeast side of the road. Moreover, there was the facility for parking the cars available for the staff members as well as general public on the eastern side. Number of bus stops can be noticed on the opposite direction of car parking.

Moving further, a new car parking was constructed on the eastern side of a city hospital. The place which was earlier occupied for parking for staff and public was only made available for employees. Two roundabouts were introduced along with the hospital road which make the accessibility to road more convenient. Further, a bus station was also added on the west side.

Overall, the road to a city hospital undergoes several significant changes along with the introduction of two roundabouts, a bus station, separate parking facilities both for the general public and staff members which make the road look more organized.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and highlighting the main features of the two maps comparing 2007 and 2010. Key transformations—such as the addition of the two roundabouts, the new public car park on the east of Ring Road, the designation of the existing car park strictly for staff, and the construction of the bus station—are successfully identified and reported. The comparisons between the two years are logical and supported by the visual data. The response fully satisfies the requirements of Academic Task 1, demonstrating a well-developed, clear summary without significant omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression from an introduction to body paragraphs detailing specific features and concluding with an overall summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different temporal snapshots and thematic changes. Cohesive devices are generally handled well, using phrases like 'The former map', 'Whereas', and 'Moving further' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in phrasing (e.g., 'At the first glance, it can be clearly seen that...'). Overall, the information flows smoothly, and the cohesive relationships between ideas are clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited for describing map transformations. Phrases such as 'pictorial representations', 'modifications done', 'earlier occupied', and 'convenient' are used effectively. There are some slight lexical inaccuracies and unnatural collocations, such as 'layout of the accessibility of the road' and 'accessed road', which detract from natural flow. Nevertheless, less common vocabulary is attempted with reasonable success, and spelling is accurate throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and passive voice constructions (e.g., 'A new car parking was constructed', 'The place which was earlier occupied...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and control of past tense is generally well maintained when describing the 2007 features. However, occasional minor grammatical inaccuracies persist, such as 'a new car parking' (where 'car park' is more natural) and 'make the accessibility to road more convenient' (missing an article and prepositional agreement). Communication is never impeded by these errors.
