Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying the key changes in the hospital maps between 2007 and 2010. A clear overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the main developments such as new car parks, a bus station, and roundabouts. The writer effectively reports the specific spatial features, noting the addition of roundabouts on Ring Road and City Road, the replacement of individual bus stops with a designated bus station, and the reorganization of the staff and public car parks. Although some minor details could be extended further, the response covers all relevant visual information accurately and meets the requirements of an Academic Task 1 summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory sentence, followed by an overview paragraph, and then separates the body details geographically into northern and southern parts using cohesive phrases like "Looking first at..." and "Looking at southern part of the area...". Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the essay. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, although referencing and linking could be slightly smoother, such as omitting unnecessary repetition or ensuring articles are used correctly before directional phrases (e.g., "the northern part"). Overall, cohesion is clear and supports readability throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to describing maps and changes over time, using terms such as "significant development," "undamaged," "demolished," and "designated." There are, however, some lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as "seperated" instead of "separated" and minor collocation errors like "ring road had an addition of roundabout" instead of "a roundabout was added to the Ring Road." Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with reasonable precision and flexibility for a Band 6.5 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and prepositional phrases (e.g., "connecting hospital road and ring road in 2010"). Grammatical control is generally fair, but there are noticeable errors in articles and plurals, such as "The maps illustrates" (agreement error), "several new car park" (singular instead of plural), and missing articles before nouns ("northern part," "ring road"). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching Band 7.
