Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to cover the main changes between the two maps, such as the addition of roundabouts, the relocation of the bus station, and the separation of car parks. However, the information is presented in a fragmented and underdeveloped manner. While an overall trend is attempted in the second paragraph, it lacks clarity and precision. Key features like the transformation of individual bus stops into a designated bus station and the addition of the new public car park are mentioned loosely, but the lack of a clear, coherent overview and poor integration of data restrict the task achievement. The response reaches the minimum word count, but the descriptive coverage remains basic and lacks a well-supported comparative structure.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text is divided into short, disjointed paragraphs that fail to establish a smooth logical progression. Although cohesive markers like 'To begin with' and 'Furthermore' are used, they introduce poorly structured sentences and isolated phrases rather than cohesive arguments. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas is illogical, with single sentences acting as paragraphs in some instances. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial relationships between the hospital, roads, and surrounding amenities. Overall cohesion is faulty and mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, heavily relying on simple terms like 'car park', 'bus station', 'hospital road', and 'roundabout'. There are several noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'lane access' instead of 'road access', 'innovated staff car park', and 'easten side'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with significant inaccuracy. While the vocabulary is just about adequate to identify the physical features shown on the maps, the numerous lexical errors and limited range restrict the score to the lower bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly formed fragments, such as 'In 2010, public car park is easten side and bus station are the west side.' There are frequent and severe grammatical errors involving missing verbs, incorrect prepositions (e.g., 'in easten side the hospital road'), and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'Roundabout are connected'). Complex structures are rarely attempted, and when they are, they are inaccurate. These pervasive errors frequently strain the reader's understanding.
