Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The maps below illustrates the advancement of road access to a remote hospital from 2007 to 2010.
Overall, There has been a major improvement in the road network. The hospital road which had a bustop facilities leading to the city hospital was converted to a easy access road network, which allows easier, faster flow of transportation, different vehicles also have their designated spots. Futhermore, the car park which includes the staff and public in 2007 at the same place, was given seperate spots in 2010.
When you walk towards the city hospital in 2007, there was just T-junction which will lead you left, right or foward, but in 2010 the T-juunction has been changed to a roundabout, which has given vehicles more access to different area, when you turn to the right, the city road remains at the same position, but when you walk towards the northwest, a space that used to be a spot for bustop was turned into a Bus station and this can be access through two entrances.
Futhermore, as at 2007 the second T-junction was turned to a roundabout, turning to the right, the first entrance you come across is where the staff and public parked their cars, and that changed in 2010, the public car park was moved to the right end of the city hospital while the staff car park still remains at the exact spot.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to summarise the main changes between the two maps, noting the introduction of roundabouts, the reorganisation of the car parks, and the new bus station. However, there are notable inaccuracies and omissions in reporting the visual data. For instance, the text claims the hospital was 'remote' (which is not shown) and misdescribes the spatial relationships, such as stating the public car park was moved to the 'right end' of the hospital when it is actually placed on the east side of Ring Road. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat vague and conversational in tone ('There has been a major improvement'). While the key features are generally touched upon, the lack of precision and some inaccurate data interpretation pull this down to Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing different areas of the maps. However, the progression is hindered by overly conversational, narrative-driven transitional phrases like 'When you walk towards the city hospital'. Cohesive devices are sometimes used awkwardly or repetitively ('furthermore', 'when you turn'). Paragraphing is present, but the overall logical flow between sentences feels disjointed due to the heavy use of first- and second-person perspective ('you walk', 'you come across'), which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. This level of cohesion and structural management aligns with a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common collocations such as 'road network', 'designated spots', and 'roundabout'. However, there are numerous lexical errors, word choice inaccuracies, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as 'bustop' (bus stop), 'Futhermore' (Furthermore), 'seperate' (separate), and 'T-juunction'. The phrasing is often informal or imprecise, lacking the formal register expected in Academic Writing. Because the errors do not completely obscure meaning but are noticeable and frequent, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The hospital road which had a bustop facilities leading to the city hospital was converted to a easy access road network...'. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors including subject-verb agreement issues ('The maps below illustrates'), missing articles ('a easy access road'), incorrect prepositions ('as at 2007'), and run-on sentences with comma splices. Complex structures are frequently flawed. While the meaning is generally decipherable, the density of grammatical errors keeps the score at Band 5.0.
