Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. Importantly, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 139 words, falling short of the 150-word minimum. While the student attempts to summarise the main changes between the 2007 and 2010 maps—such as the addition of roundabouts, a bus station, and the rearrangement of car parks—the overview is extremely limited and poorly formulated ("services has been more acesssable"). Furthermore, some details are inaccurate or confused, such as the description of the public car park relocation. To improve, the student must meet the word count, present a clearer, more accurate summary of the overall trends, and expand on the spatial transformations with greater precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation attempted, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. The response is divided into brief paragraphs, but the logical flow is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and mechanical cohesive devices. For instance, transitional phrases like "Looking towards the data in" and "Likewise, Now" are used unnaturally, and sentences within the body paragraphs are disjointed. Paragraphing is rudimentary, and the relationship between ideas is not always transparent. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to ensure ideas are logically sequenced with smoother transitions, clearer referencing of spatial features, and a more structured paragraph layout that guides the reader seamlessly through the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the maps, such as "roundabout" and "car parking area", but struggles with word choice, collocation, and word formation. Noticeable errors are present throughout the text, including spelling and morphological mistakes like "acesssable", "campare", "northen", "easten", and "orignal". These inaccuracies occasionally cause strain for the reader. To improve, the writer should expand their vocabulary for describing geographical and structural changes, pay closer attention to standard collocations, and practice accurate spelling and word forms to ensure clear communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex forms that are flawed. There are frequent errors in verb tense, subject-verb agreement, and articles that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of grammatical errors include "the services has been", "is remained same", "there is staff car parking area connecting", and "their was many bus stops". Punctuation is also erratic in places. To reach a higher standard, the writer must improve their control over basic grammatical patterns, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, use appropriate verb tenses for describing past and present map data, and reduce the frequency of structural errors.
