IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The flow diagrams illustrate the road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, it is clear that the later plan of the road access to a city hospital has undergone several changes during that period. A combined bus station was constructed opposite the staff car park and the addition of a separate car parking for the public.
In 2007, the road access to the city hospital had six separate bus stops, with three on the each side of the hospital road, while combined car parking for hospital staff and public was located to the east of the bus stops, on right-hand side of the hospital road.
Meanwhile, in 2010, two roundabouts were constructed to manage the flow of traffic, with one on each side of the hospital road. A combined bus station was constructed to the west of the hospital road, with access to both roundabouts. A separate car park for hospital staff was also provided, just opposite the newly built bus station, while a separate car park for public was constructed to the north-west of the city hospital, with a direct link to the ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two maps. The overview clearly highlights the major developments, such as the construction of roundabouts, a combined bus station, and new public parking facilities. Key details from the visual data, including the transformation of the car parks and the replacement of individual bus stops with a bus station, are accurately captured and extended well. However, there is a slight inaccuracy in referring to the maps as 'flow diagrams', which demonstrates a minor misinterpretation of the graphic type, preventing the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the ideas are well-supported and relevant throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the response. Information is grouped logically by time period, with the introduction and overview followed by a detailed paragraph for 2007 and another for 2010. Cohesive devices such as 'In 2007', 'Meanwhile, in 2010', and 'while' are used effectively to link ideas and contrast the two years. Paragraphing is managed appropriately to separate the different sections of the report. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional minor clunkiness in transitions prevents the cohesion from feeling entirely seamless or sophisticated.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, using less common items with an awareness of style and collocation, such as 'undergone several changes', 'manage the flow of traffic', and 'directly link'. There are occasional lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'a separate car parking for the public' where 'parking' is used incorrectly instead of 'park', and 'on the each side' which contains an article error. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly and allows the response to meet the requirements of this band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over several complex structures like relative clauses and participial phrases, as seen in 'a separate car park for public was constructed to the north-west of the city hospital, with a direct link to the ring road.' There are some errors in grammar, such as the incorrect article use in 'on the each side' and preposition or pluralisation issues in 'separate car parking', but these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. The control of grammar and punctuation is generally sound, bridging the gap between basic sentence patterns and more advanced structures.
