Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The two maps illustrates that between 2007 and 2010 people will be able to use road to a city hospital.
Overall, development can be seen with the passage of time, on either side of the road two roundabouts were built, joining the bus station. While, a city hospitals remains at the same place.
Firstly in 2007, the city hospital was towards the north, surrounded by a ringroad. Infron of the city hospital was a long hospital road and on either side of it were bus stops. However, this road used to connect the city hospital to the main road (south).
Secondly in 2010, the city hospital and ringroad remained at the same place. Whereas, infron of the city hospital and on city road two roundabouts were constructed, between the two roundabouts there was long hospital road. On the right east side of hospital road bus station were replaced by staff car park and on the left west side the bus station remained. While, on the right side of the city hospital public car park was built.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the hospital access maps from 2007 to 2010. You successfully identify key changes such as the construction of roundabouts, the addition of a new public car park, and the relocation or modification of the bus station and staff car park. However, some parts of the response are under-developed or unclear. For instance, the opening sentence 'people will be able to use road to a city hospital' confuses the future tense with the past timeline of the maps, and the description of the bus station and car parks in the final paragraph is slightly confused and difficult to follow. To move to a higher band, ensure that all descriptions are fully clear and accurately reflect the visual data without mechanical confusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use sequencing devices like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to guide the reader through the comparison. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical, and referencing is not always clear. For example, expressions like 'While, a city hospitals remains' and repetitive linking create a somewhat disjointed flow. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother. To achieve a higher band, work on using a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that referencing words link ideas seamlessly across sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'roundabouts', 'constructed', 'ringroad', and 'car park'. There are, however, noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'The two maps illustrates' (agreement error crossing into grammar, but also word choice), 'Infron' (spelling), and inaccurate descriptions like 'bus station were replaced'. Less common vocabulary is attempted but lacks precision and correct collocation. To improve lexical resource, focus on mastering basic spelling, ensuring proper word forms, and using precise descriptive vocabulary suited to academic map comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses ('people will be able to use', 'illustrates that... between 2007 and 2010'), missing articles ('on city road two roundabouts were constructed'), and preposition usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur regularly and restrict the accuracy of your sentences. To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate better control over tense consistency—especially when describing historical maps—and improve the accuracy of basic grammatical structures such as subject-verb agreement and article use.
