Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response makes a basic attempt to describe the two maps, noting some of the general changes such as the reconfiguration of the bus facilities, roundabouts, and car parks. However, the information is presented in a very limited and disjointed manner. Important features, such as the overall layout changes around Ring Road, are not clearly reported, and the inclusion of random keyboard smash text at the end indicates a failure to fully complete the task. Furthermore, the selection of data is somewhat confused, with features described vaguely, such as referencing the bus stop located to the front of the hospital. Overall, the task is addressed only minimally, and the response lacks a clear, structured overview of the major trends between 2007 and 2010.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The overall arrangement lacks a clear logical progression and adequate paragraphing. The response is essentially a single block of loosely connected statements rather than a well-organised report. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and mechanical, relying heavily on simple connectors like 'and' or 'but' to link clauses. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which map elements are being discussed. For instance, transitions between the 2007 features and the 2010 modifications are abrupt and confusing. To improve, the writer needs to group related information logically into distinct paragraphs, such as an introductory overview followed by body paragraphs dedicated to specific spatial areas, and employ a wider range of cohesive links to guide the reader smoothly through the visual data.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent errors in word formation, choice, and spelling that occasionally strain the reader's comprehension. Examples of inaccuracies include 'cahnges' for changes, 'bigest', and 'releaf' for relief. The student also attempts some descriptive vocabulary, such as 'shifted' and 'added', but overall the lexical range is narrow and barely adequate for the task. There is an absence of less common lexical items or precise spatial terminology (such as 'relocated', 'intersections', or 'demolished') that would demonstrate greater flexibility. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary related to map trends and eliminate basic spelling mistakes through careful proofreading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple sentences alongside faulty attempts at complex forms. There are frequent errors in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text, such as 'the two main changes i note is' and 'bus station also started in this time'. Punctuation is also weak, with missing capitalization on the pronoun 'I' and run-on phrasing in places, culminating in a string of random characters at the end of the text. While some basic sentences are comprehensible, the frequency of grammatical errors causes noticeable difficulty for the reader and prevents the writing from displaying a reliable control of complex sentence patterns.
