IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given two maps illustrate how road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the area underwent considerable developments, with several new facilities like a bus station and two roundabouts being added and some existing features being removed.
In 2007, on the northern side of the city hospital there was a ring road, while on the southern side the city road was located. After the city road, the hospital road went towards the city hospital and on the both side of the hospital road there were several bus stops. The car parking for the staff and the public was located on the eastern side of the hospital road.
In 2010, the locations of the ring road, hospital road and city road did not change. Moreover, the car parking area for the staff and the public had been separated. The public car parking place was on the right side of the city hospital, although the staff parking was on the right of the city hospital. On the left side of the hospital road, there was a bus station. Additionally, there were two roundabouts on the hospital road so that the traffic did not jam here.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the maps from 2007 and 2010 and making relevant comparisons, such as noting that the locations of the ring road and hospital road remained unchanged while new facilities were added. However, some aspects are under-developed or less clearly reported, such as the exact placement and transformation of the car parking areas and the removal of the individual bus stops. An adequate overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the general development of the area, which satisfies the requirements for this band level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by separate body paragraphs for 2007 and 2010. Cohesive devices and referencing are sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'In 2007' and 'In 2010' to structure the paragraphs, and occasional referencing issues like 'so that the traffic did not jam here'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the time periods, but greater flexibility in logical transitions would be needed to reach a higher level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic spatial relationships and changes over time. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'considerable developments' and 'facilities', but there are occasional word choice and phrasing inaccuracies, such as 'the car parking for the staff and the public' and describing the parking as being 'on the right of the city hospital' rather than using precise compass directions. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate and do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over past tense narratives and descriptive structures. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as the missing verb in the opening sentence ('illustrate how road access... was') and minor preposition or article issues. These errors are noticeable but they rarely impede communication, and the proportion of error-free sentences aligns with the expectations for this band.
