IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given two maps illustrate how road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the area underwent considerable developments, with several new facilities like a bus station and two roundabouts being added and some existing features being removed.
In 2007, on the northern side of the city hospital there was a ring road, while on the southern side the city road was located. After the city road, the hospital road went towards the city hospital and on the both sides of the hospital road there were several bus stops. The car parking for the staff and the public was located on the eastern side of the hospital road.
In 2010, the locations of the ring road, hospital road and city road did not change. Moreover, the car parking area for the staff and the public had been separated. The public car parking place was on the right side of the city hospital, although the staff parking was on the right of the city hospital. On the left side of the hospital road, there was a bus station. Additionally, there were two roundabouts on the hospital road so that the traffic did not jam here.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the hospital access maps in 2007 and 2010 and making relevant comparisons, such as noting that the ring road and city road remained unchanged while new facilities like a bus station and roundabouts were introduced. However, certain aspects are under-developed or imprecise. For instance, the opening sentence has a missing verb ("illustrate how road access... was arranged"), and the description of the car parks in 2010 is slightly confused with repetitive phrasing regarding their positions ("on the right side of the city hospital, although the staff parking was on the right of the city hospital"). An overview is present and adequately summarises the main developments, but further extension and precision in detailing the layout changes would elevate the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into logical paragraphs: an introduction with an overview, a description of the 2007 map, and a description of the 2010 map. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the comparison, such as "Overall", "In 2007", "In 2010", and "Moreover". However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, particularly when transitioning between spatial descriptions. For example, the phrase "on the right side of the city hospital" is reused awkwardly without clear differentiation of the two separate car park locations. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods, ensuring the progression of information remains generally clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic spatial and comparative information with terms such as "considerable developments", "facilities", and "intersections" (implied). The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as "roundabouts" and "separated", but these attempts occasionally suffer from slight inaccuracies or repetitive phrasing, such as repeatedly using "right side" and "left side" rather than precise compass directions or varied spatial descriptors. Spelling and word choice are generally clear and do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the descriptive points, even though the range of lexico-grammatical items remains somewhat restricted.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising subordinate clauses and prepositional phrases (e.g., "so that the traffic did not jam here"). There are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, most notably the incomplete clause in the opening sentence ("The given two maps illustrate how road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.") and minor prepositional or article slips elsewhere. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are accurate, and control over past tense verbs used for describing the historical maps is generally maintained throughout the text.
