Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the writer attempts to compare the two maps of the city hospital from 2007 and 2010, the overview is missing, and key features are insufficiently reported or omitted. For instance, the specific changes regarding the bus stops and the removal of several individual bus stops in favour of a bus station are poorly described. Furthermore, some of the descriptions of spatial relationships and developments are unclear or inaccurate, such as stating that 'the city hospital is exist in the North'. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a clear overall trend or overview of the main changes and select and report data more accurately without relying on vague assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the response, dividing the content into an introduction and two body paragraphs representing the two years, but there is no clear overall progression or cohesive structure. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical or repetitive manner, such as starting multiple sentences with temporal markers ('In 2007', 'However, in 2010') without establishing smooth links between ideas. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'on opposite side of the road' or 'right direction a road which is connected'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion lacks logical flow. To improve, the writer should ensure that sentences are linked more naturally and that the logical relationship between spatial features is clearly maintained throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items related to urban planning and map features, such as 'roundabout', 'facility', and 'plantation', but these attempts are often marred by inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'slightly upgrade the map' instead of 'upgrade the facilities' or 'modify the layout'. There are also lexical inaccuracies and word-formation errors like 'is exist'. While communication is generally maintained, these noticeable limitations restrict the score. To progress further, the writer should build a stronger repertoire of functional vocabulary for describing spatial changes, trends, and infrastructural developments with greater precision and natural collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex structures. Frequent grammatical errors are present throughout the text, including tense and verb form errors ('The two maps illustrates', 'the city hospital is exist'), missing articles ('in north', 'on east side'), and incorrect prepositions ('in the east location', 'accross the hospital road'). These frequent errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and reveal poor control of basic grammatical patterns. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their structural repertoire by incorporating a wider variety of accurate complex sentences, whilst paying closer attention to subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositional usage.
