Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the road access changes around the city hospital between 2007 and 2010. It presents an overview and reports key developments such as the new roundabouts and car parks. However, some aspects are under-developed or inaccurately described. For example, the student states that the bus station was located to the east, whereas the visual data shows it on the west side, and the individual bus stops from 2007 are omitted in the summary. While the main comparisons are attempted, the minor inaccuracies in detailing the map features prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, moving from an introduction to the 2007 map, the 2010 map, and finally a concluding overview. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the essay. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in the transition 'overall, the hospial itself...' and some referencing issues. Connective devices are basic and occasionally repetitive. To reach the next level, the student needs to use a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure smoother transitions between ideas and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to attempt less common terms such as 'metropolitian', 'reorganised', and 'considerably redesigned'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('hospial', 'hosptal', 'roan', 'seperate', 'praking', 'locatio', 'reorgnised') and word choice inaccuracies that occur throughout the text. While these do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. To improve, the student must broaden their control of spelling, word forms, and precise collocations when describing spatial changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing past tenses and passive structures appropriately in places. There are some error-free sentences, but errors in grammar and punctuation are noticeable. Examples include missing articles ('Two roundabout had been constructed to hospital road'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the road network become'), and preposition errors. Although these errors rarely impede communication, the frequency of basic slips prevents the grammar score from advancing into the higher bands.
