Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two given maps provide information on the different ways leading to an urban hospiatl in two different year, 2007 and 2010 respectively. There are multiple enhancements that took place between these years. These include introducing a new bus stop, a roundabout and different parkings for the staff of the hospital and for public. In 2007, there was a signle same parking that was used for both the faternity of the hospital and incoming clients and patients which was later developed into separate parking areas in 2010. Another optimal approach was followed by constructing a new bus station near to the hospital in 2010 that was on the East of the hospital earlier in 2007. To avoid traffic jams, a new round about was also built to ensure the seamless flow of traffic to the hospital. These major projects make sure that the hospital infrastructure is now more suitable for everyone visiting the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main parts of the task by outlining the key changes between 2007 and 2010, such as the introduction of separate car parks, a new bus station, and roundabouts. However, some parts are only partially covered or lack precision. For instance, the text mentions "introducing a new bus stop" when the maps actually show the replacement of individual bus stops with a designated bus station. Additionally, the description of the bus station's location in 2007 contains inaccuracies, as the transcription shows individual bus stops along Hospital Road rather than a single bus station on the east. The overview is somewhat limited, and certain details are under-developed, placing the response at this intermediate level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to organize information logically, moving from an introduction to specific changes. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Phrases used to connect ideas, such as "Another optimal approach was followed," feel unnatural and disrupt the smooth progression of information. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous description of where the bus station was located in 2007. Paragraphing is kept to a single block after the introduction, which limits the structural clarity of the report. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and group information into clearer, distinct paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to incorporate less common lexical items such as "enhancements," "faternity," and "seamless flow." However, there are notable spelling errors, such as "hospiatl," "signle," and "faternity," alongside awkward word choices like "parkings" (which is uncountable) and "faternity" instead of staff or personnel. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not severely impede communication, but they restrict the score to this band. To improve, the writer should focus on accurate word forms, correct spelling, and more natural collocations when describing map changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using relative clauses and participial phrases, such as "that was used for both the faternity..." and "to ensure the seamless flow of traffic." There are some grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as "ways leading to" instead of routes or roads, and preposition choices like "near to" instead of simply "near." However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the sentence structures to show a reasonable level of control overall.
