IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided map illustrates the notable changes to access road of the city hospital in three years from 2007 to 2010.
Overall, significant modifications were made to the infrastructure surrounding City Hospital between the three years, with alterations in parking facilities, public transportation access, and traffic flow evident.
To begin with, In 2007, there was only one crossroad leading to the hospital which was connected to the ring road surrounding the city hospital. A small parking area, situated to the east of the hospital road was dedicated to staff and public and bus stops were present along the sides of the hospital road.
However, in 2010 there were significant advancements in the area. Two roundabouts were added in the intersections of city road – hospital road and hospital road – ring road. A bus stop was constructed to the west of hospital road which was connected to both the roundabouts. In addition to this, two car parks were created, the first, to the east of city hospital and ring road for visitors and the second, where the old car park was situated, reserved for employees.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the hospital access roads in both 2007 and 2010. You provide a clear overview in the second paragraph mentioning the main alterations in parking, public transport, and traffic flow. Key features like the new roundabouts, relocated car parks, and changes to bus services are correctly identified and compared. However, some areas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the exact transition of the bus stops into a centralised bus station lacks finer detail, and the description of the 2007 layout could be more thoroughly contrasted with the 2010 updates to fully satisfy higher band expectations. Overall, your content is relevant and grounded accurately in the provided visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs. You make use of logical connectors and transition signals such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'However' to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and individual body points. Nevertheless, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical or formulaic, and referencing could be smoother in places, such as how you introduce the secondary parking area. To achieve a higher band, ensure cohesive devices connect ideas more naturally and fluidly without drawing unnecessary attention to themselves.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to urban planning and map description, such as 'infrastructure', 'modifications', 'advancements', and 'intersections'. Communication is generally clear, and your vocabulary choices are sufficient to convey the main spatial changes. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as writing 'access road' instead of 'access roads' and 'in the intersections' instead of 'at the intersections'. Furthermore, relying on slightly repetitive phrasing limits your lexical score. To reach the next level, incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of synonyms to describe spatial alterations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
Your writing displays a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and incorporating complex clauses effectively in places, such as 'which was connected to the ring road'. You maintain consistent control over past tense forms to describe the 2007 map and present/past contrasts for 2010. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('access road of the city hospital') and unnecessary capitalization or punctuation slips ('To begin with, In 2007'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To improve further, aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine your use of articles and prepositions.
