IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given two maps illustrate how road access to a city hospital changed between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the area underwent considerable developments, with several new facilities like a bus station and two roundabouts being added and some existing features being removed.
In 2007, on the northern side of the city hospital there was a ring road, while on the southern side the city road was located. The hospital road extended from the city road towards the hospital. On both sides of the hospital road there were several bus stops. The car parking for the staff and the public was located on the eastern side of the hospital road.
In 2010, the locations of the ring road, hospital road and city road did not change. Moreover, the car parking area for the staff and the public had been separated. The public car parking place was on the right side of the city hospital, although the staff parking was on the left side of the city hospital. On the left side of the hospital road, there was a bus station. Additionally, there were two roundabouts on the hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main changes between 2007 and 2010. It includes a clear overall summary stating that the area underwent considerable developments. However, some features are slightly underdeveloped or imprecise, such as describing the new public car park simply as being 'on the right side of the city hospital' rather than specifying its location on the east side of Ring Road. Similarly, the individual bus stops in 2007 are noted, but the transition to a consolidated bus station in 2010 could have been integrated more smoothly with the new roundabout locations. Despite these minor limitations, the overall selection of features and comparisons provides a relevant and clear overview of the map transformations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into an introduction with an overall trend, a description of the 2007 layout, and a comparison with the 2010 layout. Cohesive devices such as 'In 2007', 'Overall', and 'In 2>**2010**' are used effectively to guide the reader through the spatial changes. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different time periods. To achieve an even higher standard, cohesion could occasionally be rendered slightly less mechanical by varying transitional phrases and integrating spatial descriptions more fluidly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the changes shown in the maps with terms like 'considerable developments', 'facilities', and 'intersections'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'undewent', 'surrounded', and 'designated' (though the latter is implied). There are occasional awkward word choices or phrasing, such as 'car parking' instead of 'car park', and 'on the right side' rather than 'to the east', which reflect a band six performance with elements of higher levels. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate and do not impede communication at all.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and prepositional phrases correctly. There is a good control of past tense verbs to describe the historical states of the maps, such as 'extended', 'was located', and 'did not change'. Some errors in grammar and punctuation persist, such as minor article inconsistencies and slightly repetitive sentence structures, but they rarely impede communication. To reach the next level, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of more complex syntactic structures with a higher frequency of completely error-free sentences.
