IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given map shows the road access development for the city hospital from 2007/10. We can notice the drastic changed among the three years.

Fisrtly, the main changes was made at the hospital road but the ring road is at the same place. As we saw the southern side of the hospital, they constructed two new roundabout. Secondly, instead of the bus station, they introduced the new bus station which is connected with both roundabouts.

Secondly, the significant change is the parking stand. In 2007, the staff and the public car were at the same place but now in the upgradation model, they made a the separate car park for the staff and for the public it is now at the eastern side of the hospital. It was the very great idea to separate the car parks because of this the time cannot be wasted and easy to recognize their vehicle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying key developments between 2007 and 2010, such as the introduction of roundabouts, the relocation of the bus station, and the reconfiguration of the car parks. However, some ideas are under-developed or less clear, and the overview contains inaccuracies regarding the timeline, as the writer mentions 'three years' and '2007/10' instead of a three-year span. Furthermore, the final paragraph includes personal commentary and speculation ('It was the very great idea to separate the car parks because of this the time cannot be wasted'), which falls outside the objective reporting required for Academic Task 1. To reach a higher band, the writer must maintain an objective tone, omit personal opinions, and provide a more fully developed, accurate summary without temporal confusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding reflection. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The writer relies heavily on basic sequencing words like 'Fisrtly', 'Secondly', and 'Secondly' (repeating the same transition word), and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'the upgradation model'. Paragraphing is used, but the logical progression is hindered by repetitive sequencing and sudden shifts into personal evaluation. To improve, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure each paragraph advances the logical flow of visual data rather than mixing reportage with subjective commentary.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to attempt less common terms such as 'upgradation', 'construction', and 'reconfigure' (implied). However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect a limited and mechanical range, such as 'Fisrtly', 'changed' instead of 'changes', 'parking stand' instead of 'car park', and 'upgradation model'. Collocations are sometimes awkward, for instance, 'the main changes was made at the hospital road'. While communication is generally maintained, these lexical slips and non-standard forms prevent the response from achieving a higher band. To progress, the student should expand their range of functional vocabulary for describing maps, focus on accurate word forms, and eliminate spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability to form multi-clause sentences, such as 'In 2007, the staff and the public car were at the same place but now in the upgradation model...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the main changes was made'), article misuse ('the new bus station'), pluralization ('public car' instead of 'public cars'), and awkward prepositions. Some complex structures are clumsy and obscure the meaning, such as 'because of this the time cannot be wasted and easy to recognize their vehicle'. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences, improve control over basic grammatical agreements, and refine complex syntactic structures.
