IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given two map illustrates the accessability of a city road to the city hospital in year 2007 and 2010.
Overall, significant public amenities has been developed and some with few alterrations. The major changes happed to public car park, bus station, and some work has been done for the smoother traffic turns.
To begin with, a roundabout is constructed for the smoother traffic flow at both the city road connecting the hospital road, and the hospital road connecting the ring road. Six bus stops situated on both sides of the hospital road has been transformed to large a bus station on the west of the hospital road and the East side has now been reserved for the hospital's staff car parking. The public car park has been shifted to a newly constructed area that is on the East side of the Ring road. This new design has created easiness for both the general public and employers of hospital by establishing few new services and implementing some alterations to previous infrastructure.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all key features of the two maps, presenting a clear overview of the main developments between 2007 and 2010. You adequately highlight the changes regarding the car parks, bus facilities, and the introduction of roundabouts. The selection of information is generally accurate, noting how the six individual bus stops were replaced by a larger bus station and how the public car park was relocated to the east of Ring Road. However, the explanation of certain details shows a slight tendency to over-generalise or under-develop certain points, such as the exact positioning of the new road layouts. To reach a higher level, you could ensure that all spatial relationships are described with greater precision, avoiding minor generalisations and providing a more fully extended discussion of the transformation as a whole.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your response maintains a clear logical organisation and progression overall. You successfully introduce the maps and provide an overview paragraph, followed by a body paragraph detailing specific changes. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the comparison, using phrases like 'To begin with' and 'Overall'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or formulaic, which prevents the essay from achieving a fully natural flow. To move up to higher standards, you should work on integrating cohesive links more seamlessly within sentences rather than relying on standard transition markers, ensuring that every sentence flows effortlessly into the next while maintaining a clear and logical structure throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'accessability', 'amenities', and 'alterrations'. However, there are noticeable issues with word choice, word form, and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'accessability' instead of accessibility, 'alterrations' instead of alterations, 'happed' instead of happened, and 'easiness' instead of ease. Furthermore, 'employers' is used incorrectly in place of employees. These lexical inaccuracies indicate a vocabulary band where control over less common vocabulary is inconsistent. To improve, you need to focus on precise word formation, correct collocations, and careful proofreading to eliminate spelling errors that detract from the overall precision of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at varied structures. However, your text is affected by a number of grammatical errors and awkward phrasing that persist throughout. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'significant public amenities has been developed' instead of have been, article errors such as 'the given two map' instead of maps, and prepositions within grammatical patterns like 'happed to public car park' instead of happened to the public car park. There are also issues with modifiers and plurals, such as 'to large a bus station'. Because these errors occur frequently and occasionally draw attention, the grammar restricts the piece to a mid-level band. To reach a higher standard, you must exercise better control over basic agreement, articles, and complex sentence construction.
