Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While it attempts to report the main features of the maps comparing 2007 and 2010, the selection of details is somewhat mechanical and features are under-developed. For instance, the mention of the bus stop placement and car parks lacks clarity in how the layout changed across the years. Furthermore, some reported details are inaccurate or confusing, such as the description of the car parks and roundabouts. To reach a higher level, the response needs to provide a clearer, more fully developed overview and select key changes more accurately, such as the addition of roundabouts and the separation of the public and staff car parks, without relying on fragmented details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation evident in the attempt to structure the writing chronologically by mentioning 2007, 2010, and an overall summary. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the arrangement feels disjointed. Cohesive devices are used inadequately or inaccurately, with abrupt transitions between sentences and mechanical phrasing such as 'By 2010, North east side bus stop replace with roundabout.' Paragraphing is also poorly managed, leading to a lack of logical flow. To improve, the writer needs to ensure ideas are logically sequenced with appropriate cohesive markers, creating a smoother progression from the introduction through the body paragraphs to a proper concluding overview.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to maps, such as 'developments', 'roundabout', and 'car park', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'replace with' instead of 'replaced by', and 'seperated' which also contains a spelling error. Repetition of basic terms like 'Hospital Road', 'City Road', and 'car park' restricts the range. To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate a wider variety of precise spatial vocabulary and synonyms, while ensuring correct word formation and spelling throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, and attempts at more complex structures are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('illustrated shows developments and changes happened in a road access'), incorrect prepositions ('changes by 2007'), and tense or verb form errors ('bus stop replace with roundabout'). Punctuation is also problematic in places, with spacing issues and run-on phrasing. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer must focus on sentence construction, ensuring accurate use of verbs, prepositions, and articles, as well as reducing the frequency of basic grammatical slips.
