IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Now I will discuss two maps that could leads to a city hospital. The 2007 map shows the city road that is nera hospital. By using that road you will reach to the parking of hospital where staff or public both can park their vehicles. That parking also has bus stop by reaching at that stop head towards north you will see the hospital. The location of hospital is it is present between the ring road. The ring road sorrounds the hospital.
The map of 2010 is more complicated as compare with 2007 as new places are added such as the parking for staff and public is separated. The bus station is also separated from parking. If you want to use 2010 map that starting from city road you will see the round about. At round about, north west road leads to bus station and the road that lead towards north is hopital road. On the east of hospital road there is parking for staff memebers only and that road leads to another round about that is in front of hospital. The ring road that sorrounds the hospital on its east side there is parking for public.
In comparison,2007 map shows that parking for everyone is same but in 2010 map parking is seperated and it is much more advanced.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a somewhat limited and descriptive overview of the two maps. The student attempts to report the main features, such as the changes in parking layout and the addition of roundabouts and a bus station in 2010. However, the explanation relies heavily on a subjective, step-by-step navigational approach ('If you want to use 2010 map that starting from city road...') rather than an objective academic summary. Furthermore, some details are under-developed or imprecise, such as describing the hospital's location simply as being 'between the ring road'. To move to a higher band, the response needs to maintain an objective tone, select and compare the most salient spatial changes more effectively, and avoid personal address or conversational narrative.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some overall organization, divided into an introduction, a body paragraph for the 2010 map, and a brief concluding comparison. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by repetitive phrasing and inadequate or mechanical cohesive devices. For instance, transitions between sentences and ideas often feel abrupt, such as moving from the hospital's location directly into the description of the 2010 map without smooth signposting. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, with pronouns like 'that' used confusingly. To achieve a higher band, the student should ensure a clearer logical progression throughout, use paragraphing more purposefully, and apply cohesive devices more accurately to link spatial relationships naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student employs basic terms related to the maps, such as 'road', 'parking', 'bus station', and 'roundabout', but attempts at less common vocabulary are sparse and often inaccurate in word choice or collocation, such as 'could leads to' or 'staff memebers only'. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including 'nera' for near, 'hopital' for hospital, and 'seperated' for separated. These errors sometimes cause slight difficulty or hesitation for the reader. To improve lexical range and precision, the student needs to incorporate a wider variety of precise spatial vocabulary and collocations, as well as pay closer attention to standard spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response utilizes a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic coordinate clauses. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to noticeable structural errors such as 'Now I will discuss two maps that could leads to' and 'The map of 2010 is more complicated as compare with 2007 as new places are added'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions inside grammatical patterns, articles, and agreement, such as 'the parking of hospital' or 'at round about'. These errors are recurrent and can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, the student must demonstrate better control over a wider variety of complex grammatical structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
