Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers some of the main features of the maps, such as the addition of roundabouts and the splitting of the car park. However, the information is only partially addressed and contains some inaccuracies regarding the visual data. For instance, the student states that the bus station remained at the same place, whereas the 2010 map shows a new bus station replacing individual bus stops. Furthermore, some key details are under-developed, and the overview is brief and lacks clarity. To reach a higher level, the response would need to provide a more thorough and accurate account of all key changes between the two years, ensuring that features are correctly identified and contrasted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The writing is fragmented into very short, disjointed sentences and paragraphs, such as single-sentence paragraphs that disrupt the flow. Cohesive devices are minimal or misused, and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the final sentence where the comparison of dates is contradictory. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the student should group related information logically, use a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices to connect sentences smoothly, and structure the response into a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and an overview.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'catagories' and 'noticable', but noticeable spelling errors ('catagories', 'convienent') and awkward word choices ('huge parking', 'public park') detract from the quality of the writing. Repetition of basic terms like 'parking area' and 'hospital road' restricts the lexical range. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to use a broader and more precise range of vocabulary, improve word formation, and ensure accurate spelling throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is limited, relying mostly on simple sentence forms with frequent errors in complex structures. There are noticeable issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'development of road', 'some changes has been made', and 'two round about'. Punctuation is also weak, with missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences like 'overall'. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct plurals and articles, and use a wider variety of accurate sentence patterns.
