IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illustrates access to city hospital in 2007 and 2010. It also depicts renovation done in 2010.
The city hospital is on the side of ring road . In 2007, the public car parking was at the either side of main hospital road whereas in 2010,it is located at the right hand side of city hospital. In 2007, there was only staff and public car parking adjacent to hospital road, but in 2010, there is bus station and staff car parking on the either side of the hospital road. The construction of two roundabouts had been done one linking city road and hospital road and other joining hospital road to ring road. In 2007, six bus stops were there on the either side of the hospital road whereas, in 2010, bus station had been built linking both the roundabouts.
Overall, few changes had been done such as establishment of bus station, roundabouts and separate public car parking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the hospital access maps in 2007 and 2010 and providing relevant comparisons. For example, the student correctly highlights the addition of the two roundabouts and the relocation of the public car park. However, some parts of the response are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies compared to the visual data. For instance, stating that public car parking was on 'either side of main hospital road' in 2007 is slightly imprecise, as the map shows staff and public parking combined on the eastern side. Furthermore, the description of the new bus station layout in 2010 could be more fully explained to reach a higher level of detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, body paragraphs, and an overview. Logical progression is visible through the contrast between 2007 and 2010 in the main body. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. The use of cohesive devices like 'whereas' and 'in 2007... in 2010' is repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'The construction of two roundabouts had been done one linking city road and hospital road and other joining hospital road to ring road,' which lacks smooth transitional links. Paragraphing is present, but the organizational flow between sentences within the body paragraph could be tighter.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic features of the maps, such as 'roundabouts', 'bus station', and 'car parking'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'renovation done' instead of 'redevelopments' or 'modifications', and 'public car parking' instead of 'public car park'. There are also minor awkward phrasings like 'on the either side'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a limited precision and flexibility in lexical control, keeping the response at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like subordinate clauses introduced by 'whereas' and 'where'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as missing articles ('access to city hospital' instead of 'access to the city hospital'), awkward passive constructions ('The construction of two roundabouts had been done'), and preposition errors ('on the either side'). Punctuation is also occasionally faulty, notably comma splices and missing commas around clauses. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the basic meaning remains clear.
