Overall Band Score: 5.5 · Cambridge IELTS 13 · 2026-10-03
IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The map from 2007 showcases a simple lineup for accessing the hospital. While this offers a simple route to the hospital to make it easier for drivers to get to the point in time, it also show a lack of options. All the vehicules enter from the same point which can easily cause a traffic choke in a single point and that would be crucial in some cases. This lineup need mutiple entries and different parks to avoid confusion and get rid of traffic. That's when they came up with the 2010 map for road access. This new lineup added mutiple entries to the hospital and showed diversity of parks along with mutiple roundabouts that help reduce confusion for drivers. The new lineup should help ambulances have the priority when it comes to crucial or vital cases, it also helps people follow an order for parking and taking different routes for exit or even for public transportation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially, attempting to compare the 2007 and 2010 maps of the city hospital. However, instead of strictly summarising the visual data such as the specific changes in roads, car parks, and bus stations, the writer drifts into personal speculation and general commentary about traffic control, ambulances, and driver confusion. The key features of the maps are therefore not fully or accurately reported, and the overall overview required in an academic task is missing, keeping the score at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the response, moving from a discussion of the 2007 map to the 2010 changes, but there is no clear overall progression or standard academic paragraphing. Cohesive devices are somewhat repetitive and mechanical, such as the repeated use of 'The map from 2007', 'This lineup', and 'The new lineup'. Referencing becomes slightly unclear at times, which prevents the writing from flowing smoothly and achieving a higher standard of logical organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for discussing the prompt. There are noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'vehicules', 'mutiple', and 'parks' when referring to car parks. While the writer attempts some task-relevant vocabulary like 'lineup', 'access', and 'roundabouts', the frequent reliance on repetitive and informal phrasing restricts the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences often contain errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and singular/plural forms, such as 'This lineup need' instead of 'needs', and 'show' instead of 'shows'. Frequent minor errors occur throughout the text, though they generally do not completely obscure the intended meaning of the sentences.
