Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response partially addresses the task. The student attempts to report the main features of the maps, noting the addition of roundabouts, a bus station, and rearranged car parks between 2007 and 2010. However, the information is presented in a very limited and repetitive way, with key features lacking clarity and accurate detail. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 138 words, falling 12 words short of the 150-word minimum (excluding the 14 copied words from the task prompt). To reach a higher band, the writer needs to provide a fully developed overview and ensure all key spatial changes are reported more accurately and comprehensively without running short of the word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some basic organisation attempted, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The student tries to structure the text by introducing the maps, describing 2007, describing 2010, and providing an overall summary. However, cohesive devices are highly inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, relying on rudimentary connectors like 'in 2007 we have to see' and 'But in 2010 there map totally changed'. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, resulting in a clumped layout that makes the progression of ideas difficult to follow. To improve, the writer must use a wider range of cohesive devices accurately and structure the response into distinct, logical paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies heavily on basic, repetitive terms such as 'see', 'hospital road', 'car parking', and 'bus stop'. There are frequent word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'cart show' instead of 'chart shows', 'awar' instead of 'area', 'roas' instead of 'road', 'round about', 'wast', and 'hosiptal'. These lexical inadequacies and spelling mistakes cause some strain and difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary related to maps and geographical changes, while eliminating basic spelling errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The grammar and sentence structure are very weak. The response displays a severely limited range of structures, consisting mostly of fragmented or run-on simple sentences coupled with failed attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent, persistent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, such as 'Let start us', 'we have to see city hospital front of ring road', 'there map totally changed', and 'there we see changing the mean changing'. These frequent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student must focus on foundational grammatical accuracy, correct sentence boundaries, and appropriate verb tense consistency when describing visual data.
