IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps given illustrate the development of road access to a city hospital from 2007 to 2010.
Overall, in the year 2007 the city hospital was surrounded by a ring road. The city road opened to the hospital road which had 3 bus stops on either side. The bus stops to the right of the hospital road opened to the car parking for staff members and general public.
On the flip side, multiple developments can be observed in the year 2010. While the staff parking is where it previously was, in the year 2007 the public parking is now located to the right of the city hospital. The city road connects to the hospital road through a roundabout. The 4th exit opens to the hospital road while the 3rd exit at the roundabout opens to the bus station. On going further on the hospital road a new roundabout is built with the 1st exit opening to the bus station, while the 2nd and 3rd open to the ring road surrounded by the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by describing the main features of the hospital road access in both 2007 and 2010 and making relevant comparisons. An overview is attempted at the beginning of the second paragraph, though it tends to focus on specific details rather than summarising the broader structural changes. While key features such as the car parks, bus stops, and new roundabouts are identified, some descriptions are slightly under-developed or imprecise regarding their exact spatial relationships. To reach a higher band, the overview should clearly highlight the most significant global changes—such as the expansion of parking facilities and the introduction of a traffic-regulating roundabout system—and extend the support for all reported details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, successfully guiding the reader through a comparison of the two map layouts. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the initial state from the subsequent developments. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, particularly with transitions like 'On the flip side' and referencing within sentences such as 'the staff parking is where it previously was, in the year 2007 the public parking is now located'. Progression is discernible, but cleaner logical links and smoother referencing between sentences would improve the flow of information and enhance the overall structural clarity.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate to convey the necessary information for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'development', 'roundabout', and 'infrastructure layout'. The student makes some attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this occasionally results in minor inaccuracies or awkward phrasing, such as 'the city road opened to the hospital road'. Spelling is generally accurate, and word choices do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise lexical items related to urban planning and spatial description, avoiding repetitive phrasing and ensuring natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic sentence structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('the city road', 'the hospital road') and minor punctuation slips like a missing space before 'The city road connects'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are accurate. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures, pay closer attention to article usage, and ensure greater precision in prepositional phrases and punctuation.
