Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, and importantly, it falls short of the minimum word requirement, containing 148 words instead of the required 150. While the student attempts to report the main features of the maps comparing 2007 and 2010—such as the addition of roundabouts, the bus station, and changes to the car parks—the overview and selection of data are basic and imprecise. For instance, the overview states vaguely that 'road had been modified surrounded by city hospital,' failing to clearly outline the main developments. Furthermore, some spatial descriptions are inaccurate or confusing, such as claiming that 'the city road had been surrounded by ring road.' To reach a higher band, the writer needs to ensure the word count requirement is met, present a clearer and more developed overview, and report the spatial changes and additions with greater precision and clarity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the response, with an attempt at an introduction and body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is basic, and sentences are often disjointed rather than logically sequenced. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, such as the repetitive use of 'Although' at the beginning of sentences where it is logically inappropriate (e.g., 'Although, car park, staff and public parking facilities show by beside hospital road'). Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it hard for the reader to follow the spatial relationships between the hospital, roads, and new facilities. To improve, the writer needs to use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to connect ideas smoothly and ensure a logical, easy-to-follow progression of information throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common terms related to map features, such as 'roundabout' and 'parking facilities,' but these are often accompanied by noticeable word choice, collocation, and word form errors. For example, 'layout' is used instead of 'maps', 'change made road access' lacks correct prepositions, and 'pubic car park' contains a spelling error that alters the intended meaning. Other awkward phrasing includes 'road had been modified surrounded by' and 'directly attached by two junction.' These errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range, use more precise vocabulary for describing spatial changes, and pay closer attention to spelling, word forms, and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures. While there are a few simple sentences, attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors involving verb tenses and forms, articles, prepositions, and singular/plural agreement. Examples include 'The two layout below show change made road access to city hospital,' the passive voice misuse in 'Two roundabout constructed on the city road,' and missing or incorrect prepositions in phrases like 'located by city road.' Punctuation is also erratic, with misplaced commas and capitalisation issues. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control over basic and complex grammatical forms. To improve, the writer needs to practice forming accurate simple and complex sentences, carefully checking verb agreements, prepositions, and article usage.
