IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the changes made to the road access and surrounding facilities of a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.

At a first glance, the hospital underwent several significant changes during the period. The most noticeable developments were the construction of a roundabout at the main entrance. Initially, car park was together for staff and public whereas separate car parks have been developed in 2010.

In 2007, the hospital was surrounded by ring road. However, hospital road connected the city road with hospital. It is interesting to note that on both sides of hospital road there were six bus stops with three on each side. The car park for staff and public was located near the entrance.

Considering 2010, plethora of alterations had been done. Two roundabouts had been constructed at both sides of hospital road. First roundabout had been created at the front of southern entrance. Public car park had been established in eastern side of the hospital while staff's car park had been situated on right side of hospital road and bus station had been formed directly opposite to staff's car park.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by addressing both maps and highlighting the key changes between 2007 and 2010. You provide a clear overview in the second paragraph, noting the construction of roundabouts and the separation of car parks. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or lack specific detail. For example, mentioning that "plethora of alterations had been done" is too general, and while you note the new car parks and bus station in 2010, you omit the exact positions or changes regarding the second roundabout on the southern side. To reach a higher level, you should ensure all major graphical shifts are fully extended and supported with precise spatial details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs structured by timeframe, and an overview. Information is logically sequenced to guide the reader through the spatial and temporal changes. However, cohesion can sometimes be mechanical or repetitive, particularly in the way sentences are linked across paragraphs. For instance, transitional phrases like "Considering 2010" are rather abrupt, and referencing is not always completely clear when describing locations such as "right side of hospital road". Employing a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother paragraph transitions would enhance the overall flow and logical progression of the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your lexical range is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate the main features of the maps effectively. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as "plethora of alterations" and "surrounding facilities", which shows an ambition to expand your vocabulary range. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as writing "car park was together" instead of "the car park was shared" or "staff car park" rather than "staff's car park". Additionally, minor errors like omitting articles (e.g., "on eastern side" instead of "on the eastern side") occur. To improve, focus on precise collocational patterns and natural phrasing when describing visual data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There is reasonable control over verb tenses, successfully distinguishing between past states in 2007 and changes by 2010 using the past simple and past perfect. Nevertheless, some errors in grammar and punctuation persist, such as missing articles ("ring road" instead of "Ring Road" or "the ring road", and "city road"), incorrect prepositions in phrases like "at the front of southern entrance", and minor agreement issues. These errors do not impede communication, but reducing them by paying closer attention to articles and prepositions would elevate your grammatical performance.
