IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two maps compare the infrastructure and transport layout around a city hospital in 2007 with the developments established by 2010.

overall, significant development took place between 2007 and 2010,improving traffic flow through new roundbouts and providing enhanced, separated parking and public bus facilities.

The 2007 map shows a basic layout where ring road enclosed the main building, linked to city road by hospital road.Six bus stops lined hospital roas for pubil transit. To the east of this road, one combined parking area catered to both members of staff and visitors.

By 2010, the infrastructure was restructured with roundabouts built at both ends of hospital road. The roadside bus stops were cleared to build a dedicated bus station on the west. Additionally, parking was split, reserving the original lot for staff and adding a new public lot east of ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the hospital maps in 2007 and 2010. You provide a clear overview mentioning the addition of roundabouts, separated parking, and bus facilities. The key changes, such as the new public car park east of the ring road, the relocation of the bus station, and the restructured road layout, are accurately highlighted. However, the response is 12 words short of the 150-word minimum word count requirement, which prevents a higher score. To reach the next level, ensure you meet the minimum length requirement and extend your discussion of the spatial relationships and minor features slightly further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your response maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of paragraphing, separating your introduction, overview, and body paragraphs logically. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the comparison, such as 'By 2010' and 'Additionally'. However, some referencing and cohesive links are slightly mechanical. To achieve a higher band, you could use a wider and more sophisticated variety of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between the spatial details of both maps.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'infrastructure', 'restructured', and 'dedicated'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('roundbouts', 'roas', 'pubil') and minor word-choice slips that slightly detract from the precision of your writing. Your vocabulary choice is generally sufficient to communicate the main features clearly, but to reach the next band, you need to eliminate spelling mistakes and incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items with precise collocation and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You successfully use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The 2007 map shows a basic layout where ring road enclosed the main building...' and participial clauses like 'reserving the original lot for staff'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors, notably missing capitalisation ('overall', 'ring road', 'city road') and minor punctuation slips like comma splices ('overall, significant development', '2010,improving'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur with some frequency. To reach a higher band, you must demonstrate greater control over punctuation and mechanics, while increasing the proportion of error-free complex sentences.
