IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The rendred pair of maps illustrates imformation about road access to the city hospitalin diffrent years.

Overall , it is crystal clear that many changes have been seen in the hospital in both years but the city hospital remains same in both time periods.

At the fleeting glance, it can be seen that there are many bus stops in 2007,but later they will vanished and a new bus station will be constructed in 2010. Looking ahead , it can be seen that there is parking for public and staff in the year 2007, but in 2010 the public parking was built in the right side of city hospital and the old parking remains same only for staff.

Moving ahead there is no roundabout constructed in 2010 in front of the hospital road. it is also assumed that the city hospital remained the same in both timelines abd nothing has changes in the city hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main features of the maps, providing a general overview and noting key transformations such as the removal of bus stops, the addition of a new bus station, and changes to the car parks. However, the development is limited and partially inaccurate. For instance, the writer states that 'there is no roundabout constructed in 2010', which directly contradicts the visual data showing two new roundabouts on Hospital Road. Furthermore, some information is repetitive, such as repeatedly mentioning that the hospital building itself remained unchanged. To achieve a higher band, the response must cover all key visual details accurately and avoid factual contradictions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response shows some organization with a basic introduction and concluding remarks, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is rudimentary, and sentences are loosely linked together with repetitive or mechanical cohesive devices such as 'At the fleeting glance' and 'Moving ahead'. Reference pronouns are sometimes unclear, and the overall flow is disjointed, which prevents the essay from achieving a clear logical progression. To improve in this area, the writer should use a wider variety of transitional markers and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one without unnecessary repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is simple and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'rendred' instead of 'rendered', 'imformation' instead of 'information', 'diffrent' instead of 'different', and 'vanished' used inappropriately for physical structures. There are also unnatural phrasing choices like 'right side' instead of 'east side'. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach the next level, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary, including specific spatial and architectural terms, while eliminating basic spelling and collocation errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is quite limited, relying mostly on simple and repetitive sentence structures. Attempts at complex sentences frequently contain errors, such as tense inconsistencies (e.g., mixing past descriptions with future predictions like 'they will vanished') and punctuation errors, including a missing comma space after 'Overall'. There are also structural errors like 'city hospitalin' (spacing issue) and 'abd nothing has changes'. These frequent errors in grammar and punctuation cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should practice forming complex sentences accurately, maintain consistent past tenses when describing historical map changes, and pay closer attention to basic punctuation and word spacing.
