Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key features of the maps such as the new car parks and roundabouts, but missing several crucial details and inaccurately describing others. For instance, the student states that the hospital was surrounded by a ring road in 2007 'for better transportation,' which introduces extraneous reasoning rather than objective summary. Furthermore, some descriptions are vague or inaccurate, such as placing the hospital road on the northern side when it actually runs north-south, and failing to fully report the changes to the bus station and stops. The overview attempts to summarize general changes, but the lack of accurate detail and under-developed information keeps the response at this level. Additionally, ten words copied directly from the prompt were not counted toward the minimum length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organization evident in the division of paragraphs between an introduction, overall statement, and descriptions of the two years, but there is no clear overall progression or logical flow throughout. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the abrupt transition 'In contrast, new car park has been added' which does not establish a true contrast. Referencing is occasionally confusing, and the abrupt cut-off at the end of the text ('The car') demonstrates a breakdown in cohesion and logical progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks smooth links, leading to disjointed sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about the maps. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'extented area' (extended), 'road conectivity' (connectivity), 'hosipital road' (hospital road), 'builted' (built), and 'acess' (access). The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'infrastructure' and 'transportation,' but spelling mistakes and imprecise word choices cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic descriptive patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, demonstrated by fragmented structures in the overview ('With enhanced infrastructure, extented area and improved road conectivity') which lack a main verb. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('new car park has been added', 'with ring road acess'), pluralization errors ('two new roundabout', 'two roundabout is built'), and prepositions. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader throughout the text.
