Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers some of the main features of the maps, such as the introduction of roundabouts, the relocation or redesignation of the car parks, and changes to the bus facilities. However, the information is presented with noticeable inaccuracies and omissions regarding the layout. For instance, the student states that a public car parking was 'demolished' or that a bus station was made near the hospital road where bus stops previously existed, misinterpreting the spatial relationships and specific designations shown in the visual data. The overview is also weak, containing unnatural phrasings like 'new addition of roundabout on the eastern side and demolished in public car parking.' To reach a higher level, the writer needs to select and report the key spatial changes more accurately without confusing features or inventing transformations that are not supported by the maps.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response attempts a basic organizational structure with an introductory sentence, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for 2007 and 2010. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression and logical flow. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as the frequent reliance on 'However' and 'Moreover', which do not always signal logical relationships effectively. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs suffers from repetitive phrasing ('near the hospital road') and unclear referencing ('which take the huge place'). To improve, the writer should ensure that ideas follow a logical sequence and that referencing words clearly link back to the correct geographical features on the map.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Vocabulary is limited and repetitive, which minimally satisfies the requirements for the task but restricts precision. The student relies on basic terms and makes noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'road entry' instead of 'road access', 'demolished in public car parking', and 'car parking only staff member'. There are also awkward phrasings like 'take the huge place'. These errors sometimes cause strain for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to use a wider and more precise range of vocabulary related to spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'converted', 'expanded', or 'redesignated', while avoiding unnatural word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in prepositions and articles, such as 'in 2007, the city hospital was in the centre and in front of it there was hospital road', 'on the side of hospital road', and 'on the eastern side'. Furthermore, awkward clause structures like 'which take the huge place' and missing plural markers or incorrect word forms detract from the overall accuracy. These frequent errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer should focus on mastering basic sentence patterns, accurate prepositions of place, and correct article usage when describing map features.
