Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the layout of the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. The main features are selected and reported, such as the changes in parking areas and road access, including the addition of roundabouts and a bus station. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack clarity, particularly when describing specific spatial changes. For example, the overview states that the hospital area expanded and mentions separating parking areas, but the description remains somewhat vague. To reach a higher level, the writer should provide a more precise and fully extended overview highlighting the most striking overall shifts, such as the introduction of a new public car park and enhanced traffic flow systems like roundabouts, ensuring all major visual changes are explicitly contrasted without vague generalizations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into paragraphs, featuring an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each year. Information flows reasonably well, and the reader can follow the general comparison between the two maps. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing between sentences is not always clear. For instance, the transition between paragraphs relies on basic time markers ('In 2007', 'In 2010'), and phrases like 'the parking area was together in the same place' lack smooth cohesive ties to the surrounding text. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices, ensuring that links between sentences and paragraphs are seamless and that pronoun referencing is unambiguous.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is adequate for the task, successfully communicating basic ideas about map changes, such as mentioning 'parking area', 'bus station', and 'expanded'. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation. Examples include 'acess' instead of access, 'seprating' instead of separating, and 'convence' instead of convenience. Additionally, collocation and phrasing are sometimes unnatural, such as 'the parking are for the hospital worker was opposite side'. These lexical inaccuracies do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the response to a lower band. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, use precise geographical and descriptive terminology, and eliminate spelling and word-formation errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting to describe changes over time with past tense verbs. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text. Issues include tense and agreement inconsistencies, such as 'the area of the hospital were small' and 'road accss area were slightly expanded', as well as missing articles and preposition errors like 'from over a 3 year of period'. While communication is rarely impeded, these recurring structural inaccuracies prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, the writer must focus on subject-verb agreement, accurate use of articles, correct prepositional patterns, and proofreading complex sentence structures to ensure error-free execution.
